- c. 150-100 BC: A geared bronze instrument is designed and built somewhere in the Greek world, drawing on Hellenistic mathematical astronomy and on eclipse records inherited from Babylonian observers. It models the Sun, Moon, and planets, shows luni-solar calendar cycles, and predicts eclipses.
- c. 70-60 BC: A cargo ship, carrying luxury goods including bronze and marble statuary, sinks off the small island of Antikythera between Crete and the Peloponnese. The mechanism goes down with it and rests on the seabed for roughly two thousand years.
- 1900-1901: Greek sponge divers discover the wreck and, over a series of dangerous dives, recover its cargo for the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Among the corroded bronze and marble is an unremarkable-looking lump that receives little attention at first.
- 1902-05-17: Archaeologist Valerios Stais, examining the finds in Athens, notices a gearwheel embedded in the corroded bronze along with legible Greek inscriptions. It is the first recognition that the object is a geared machine rather than ordinary debris.

- Its corroded, cryptic appearance invited speculation for decades. For much of the twentieth century the mechanism was a barely legible lump whose workings were unclear, and that long period of real uncertainty gave fringe theories room to grow before imaging finally read the inscriptions.
- It fits a ready-made template. The ancient-astronaut and lost-civilization genres are built around the claim that ancient people could not have done impressive things unaided, and the mechanism is an irresistible exhibit for that story, repeated across popular books and television regardless of what specialists have found.
- Awe gets misdirected. The honest reaction to the device is amazement at what the Greeks accomplished, and that awe is easily rerouted into the idea that they must have had help, which feels more thrilling than crediting human ingenuity.

## Open questions
- Who actually designed and built the mechanism, and where, is not settled. Rhodes, Corinth, and Syracuse have all been proposed on various grounds, but no maker is named and the workshop remains unknown. This is a normal gap in ancient history, not a sign of anomaly.
- The exact date of construction is still debated within the 2nd century BC and possibly earlier, with different lines of evidence favoring different windows. Pinning it down more precisely is an ongoing scholarly question about calibration and inscription dating.
- How many such devices were made, and why the tradition of building them seems to fade from the record, are genuinely open. Survival bias makes this hard to resolve, and it says more about what the ancient world preserved than about how the objects were made.
- Parts of the gearing, especially the front planetary display, are reconstructed rather than fully preserved, so some details of how the planets were shown remain reasoned proposals that future evidence could refine.
