On one side, sudden celebrity deaths are real, and rare vaccine side effects are real and are tracked openly by regulators. On the other, the claim rated here: that a COVID-19 vaccine caused these particular deaths. The verdict is debunked. ## The claim That the sudden deaths of prominent people, among them DMX, Betty White, Bob Saget, Anne Heche, Shane Warne, Hank Aaron and Marvin Hagler, were caused by COVID-19 vaccines they had recently received, and that families, hospitals and medical examiners have concealed the connection. ## Origin and timeline - 2021-01: Hank Aaron dies at 86, seventeen days after being photographed receiving a COVID-19 vaccine at Morehouse School of Medicine, a shot he took publicly to encourage Black Americans to get vaccinated. Anti-vaccine accounts recast the photograph as evidence. The Fulton County medical examiner finds no evidence the vaccine played any role, and his widow says he died in his sleep of natural causes. - 2021-03: Boxer Marvin Hagler dies at 66. The same template is applied within hours by some of the same accounts. It is fact-checked and rejected. - 2021-03-22: New York announces that COVID-19 vaccine appointments will open to residents aged 50 and over from 23 March. The eleven-day window this creates will matter to what happens next. - 2021-04-02: Earl Simmons, the rapper DMX, collapses and is taken to White Plains Hospital in Westchester County, New York. His representative says only that he collapsed at home. Early reporting, sourced to unnamed people close to him, describes an overdose. - 2021-04-08: While DMX is still alive on life support, the gossip site MediaTakeOut publishes a story headlined that he received a COVID vaccine days before his heart attack, adding that the family says there were no drugs. Within hours the vaccine claim is circulating on Telegram via QAnon-linked accounts, on Twitter via a former Major League Baseball player who had pushed the identical template at Hank Aaron weeks earlier, and across far-right media. Snopes publishes the same day and rates it unproven. - 2021-04-12-2021-04-29: PolitiFact, USA TODAY, Full Fact and Fact Crescendo all examine the claim and reject it. DMX's attorney tells USA TODAY that his client did not receive a vaccine in the week before the cardiac arrest, though he adds that he cannot speak to any earlier period. MediaTakeOut does not retract. - 2021-12-2022-01: Betty White dies at 99, seventeen days short of her hundredth birthday. A fabricated quote claiming she had a booster three days earlier spreads widely; her agent says flatly that she died of natural causes. Bob Saget dies in January 2022 and the template runs again; the Orange County medical examiner later determines he died of head trauma from an accidental fall. - 2022-2026: The format outlives the vaccination campaign that produced it and attaches to deaths with no plausible connection at all, including Anne Heche, Shane Warne and the on-field cardiac arrest of NFL player Damar Hamlin, who survived, recovered and returned to professional football. ## The evidence, claim by claim - Claim: A family member confirmed DMX was vaccinated shortly before his heart attack. Evidence: No named relative has ever said this. The entire claim rests on one unnamed woman quoted by a gossip site while he was still on life support, and the site's own founder, when pressed by USA TODAY, stood by the piece rather than producing the source. The quotation given is also not the claim the headline made: she said he took the vaccine and had a heart attack, and then said, in terms, that she was not saying the vaccine did it. The causal assertion was manufactured above her words, not by them. - Claim: He had never had a heart attack before, so something new must have caused this one. Evidence: This is the one checkable thing the anonymous source said, and it is false. On 8 February 2016, five years earlier, DMX was found unresponsive in a Yonkers hotel parking lot with no pulse and not breathing, and was revived by responding officers. He discussed it publicly on The Breakfast Club that June, saying his heart had stopped for four minutes and that he had asthma. The claim's own foundation collapses on a fact he had told in a radio interview. No fact-check published in 2021 used it. - Claim: The family denied the overdose story, which shows they had something to correct. Evidence: The family never issued that denial. The wording came from the gossip site's headline. What the family demonstrably did do, three days later, was publicly rebut a different rumour about his masters being sold, which establishes that they knew how to correct the record when they wanted to. The photograph that made the claim travel exists because Aaron chose to be photographed being vaccinated, precisely in order to encourage Black Americans to take it. The image that was meant to build confidence became the exhibit used to destroy it, which is the clearest single illustration of how this format feeds on visibility rather than evidence. - Claim: Bob Saget and Betty White both died suddenly right after boosters. Evidence: Saget's death was investigated and ruled: the Orange County, Florida medical examiner determined he died of head trauma consistent with an accidental backward fall in a hotel room. Betty White's booster is a fabrication; the quote attributed to her was invented, and her agent stated she died of natural causes at 99. In both cases an official or authoritative account exists and neither mentions vaccination. - Claim: Damar Hamlin's on-field collapse was a vaccine death caught on camera. Evidence: He did not die. An official cause of death routinely takes weeks or months, and in the DMX case it never arrived publicly at all. The rumour has the field to itself during the exact window when the largest number of people are looking for an answer. - It borrows credibility from something true. Rare vaccine side effects are real, are disclosed by regulators, and include myocarditis in young men after mRNA doses. A claim that gestures at a real signal is far harder to dismiss than one invented from nothing, even when the specific case has no connection to it. - Sometimes it is offered as a kindness, and this is the part most coverage misses. The MediaTakeOut headline did not lead with vaccines. It led with the family saying there were no drugs.
