# John Lennon was not killed by a lone gunman but assassinated by the US government, using a mind-controlled patsy

**No verdict.** What is on the record is not in dispute: on 8 December 1980 Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon outside the Dakota in New York City, and in June 1981 he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to twenty years to life. Two larger claims are rated here, and both are unproven. The first is that the CIA or FBI orchestrated the murder and that Chapman was an MKUltra-style programmed assassin; no record ties any agency to the killing. The second, revived by the British researcher David Whelan, is that the physical evidence points to a second shooter and a buried investigation. Examined on the merits, the forensic anomalies do not establish a second gunman: the ballistics of the actual ammunition, the scene geometry, and Yoko Ono walking ahead unhurt all fit a single shooter firing from behind, and the real discrepancy between the emergency-room team and the medical examiner over the wounds is best explained by the well-documented unreliability of trauma staff at telling entrance from exit. What is genuinely and fairly open is narrower: because Chapman pleaded guilty, the forensics were never tested at a trial; the full autopsy report was never released; and a few procedural gaps were never accounted for. That John Lennon's murder was not the act of a lone, disturbed gunman but a conspiracy: in the strongest version an assassination arranged by the US government, most often named as the CIA or FBI, with Mark David Chapman as a 'Manchurian candidate' programmed to carry out the killing and take the blame; in a related version, that the forensic record hides a second shooter and the case was deliberately left uninvestigated.

## Origin and timeline
- 1971: Lennon settles in New York City and aligns himself with prominent antiwar activists. His anthem 'Give Peace a Chance' had already become a movement standard, and his public politics put him at odds with the Nixon administration.
- 1972: The FBI opens surveillance of Lennon and the Immigration and Naturalization Service moves to deport him. A memo attributed to Senator Strom Thurmond warns the White House that Lennon might mobilize young voters against Nixon ahead of the 1972 election. This surveillance is real and is later documented.
- 1975-1976: Lennon prevails in his long immigration fight and is granted permanent residency. The active FBI interest in him winds down, and he largely withdraws from public activism into several quieter years raising his son.
- 1980-12-08: Outside the Dakota, Chapman fires a Charter Arms .38 revolver at Lennon from behind, striking him four times; a fifth round misses and hits the building's glass. Lennon staggers up into the reception area, collapses, and is driven by police to Roosevelt Hospital, where he is pronounced dead. Chapman does not flee; he waits reading 'The Catcher in the Rye' and is arrested without resistance.
- 1980-12-08 (hospital): The Roosevelt Hospital team that tries to save Lennon, including surgical resident David Halleran and nurses present at the resuscitation, later describe wounds they read as entering the front of the chest. The medical examiner, Elliot Gross, records entry from the back. The discrepancy passes without remark at the time and becomes, decades later, the centerpiece of the second-shooter case.
- 1981-06: Chapman pleads guilty to second-degree murder over his own lawyer's objection, saying it was the will of God; the judge finds him competent and accepts the plea, and he is later sentenced to twenty years to life. Because there is no trial, the forensic evidence is never tested by cross-examination.
- 1989: Fenton Bresler publishes 'Who Killed John Lennon?', arguing that the CIA recruited and programmed Chapman through contacts tied to his YMCA work and a 1975 trip to Beirut, and killed Lennon to neutralize a figure who might rally opposition in the Reagan era. The book supplies the assassination theory its fullest form.
- 1981-2006: Historian Jon Wiener wages a fourteen-year Freedom of Information lawsuit, reaching the Supreme Court before the FBI settles, and the Lennon files are released in stages through 2006. They confirm political surveillance and deportation efforts, not any plan to harm him.
- 2023: The documentary 'John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial' obtains extensive police, prosecutor, and parole records under freedom-of-information requests and interviews scene and hospital witnesses. It surfaces previously unseen material and concludes Chapman acted alone; it finds no evidence of a second party.
- 2023-2026: British producer David Whelan publishes 'Mind Games' and a 2026 follow-up volume arguing, largely from an NYPD lead detective's notebooks he says he acquired, that the accepted account of the shooting cannot be true, that the wounds and glass point to a second shooter, and that the investigation was cut short. The books revive and sharpen the forensic case; their central exhibits remain privately held.

## The evidence, claim by claim
- Claim: The CIA programmed Chapman as a Manchurian candidate through MKUltra-style mind control.
  Evidence: MKUltra was real, and this site documents it: the CIA did run drug and mind-control experiments on often unwitting subjects, and the record even includes a 1954 memo asking whether a subject could be made to attempt an assassination involuntarily. That is exactly why the claim is not laughed off. But documented research is not documented application. MKUltra was ordered shut down in 1973, its records largely destroyed, and the historian who worked the surviving files found no evidence the agency ever built a working assassin, let alone tie one to Chapman. The theory infers programming from his religious fundamentalism, his YMCA work, and a 1975 Beirut trip, none of which is evidence that anyone controlled him. Absent any record of an agency acting, the presumption of innocence applies to the officials the theory accuses.
- Claim: The FBI's surveillance of Lennon proves the government wanted him dead.
  Evidence: The surveillance is genuine and was confirmed by the declassified files Jon Wiener fought to release. But those files describe political monitoring and an effort to deport Lennon as an inconvenient radical, the same COINTELPRO-era logic the Bureau applied to many activists, not a plan to kill him. The interest peaked in 1971-1972 and, by the FBI's own memos, had wound down by late 1972 once agents concluded Lennon was not the organizer they feared. Wanting someone gone from the country is not evidence of ordering their murder eight years later.
- Claim: Lennon was killed to stop him leading opposition in the Reagan era.
  Evidence: This is a motive asserted, not an act shown, and even the submitter who raised the forensic anomalies calls it the theory's weakest link. By 1980 Lennon had spent years out of activism, called himself essentially apolitical in his last major interview, and was re-emerging as a musician with a domestic-themed comeback record, not organizing a movement. His one fresh political gesture, backing striking workers days before his death, is thin ground for a state murder. The released FBI file shows no renewed interest in him in 1979 or 1980; on the evidence, the 1980 motive is inference across an eight-year gap.
- Claim: The medical team who treated Lennon said the bullets entered his chest from the front, contradicting the account of a shooter behind him.
  Evidence: This is the strongest of the forensic anomalies, and it is genuinely on the record and not an invention of the conspiracy literature: the Roosevelt Hospital surgeon David Halleran, in a 2011 account that predates the modern revival, described four entrance wounds over the left chest and three exit wounds over the left back, the reverse of the medical examiner's finding. But it does not establish a shooter in front. Trauma teams in a frantic resuscitation are formally unreliable at telling entrance from exit wounds; emergency-medicine guidance says clinicians without forensic training should never label them, and studies find they are wrong in a majority of exiting, multiple-wound cases. The team saw and opened the anterior chest, where the exit wounds were. And the direction of fire is fixed independently of any autopsy: Chapman was behind Lennon, Yoko Ono was walking ahead of him and was unhurt, and a frontal volley would have had to be fired through her from inside the vestibule, which no witness describes. The wound descriptions genuinely differ; the direction of fire does not.
- Claim: The physical evidence is riddled with ballistic anomalies: hollow-points that should have stayed in the body, a mismatched round, and more holes in the glass than one shooter could make.
  Evidence: Each dissolves into the same ordinary load. Chapman fired 158-grain lead semi-wadcutter hollow-points from a two-inch-barrel revolver, a round well known to under-expand and over-penetrate, so the premise that hollow-points 'explode and never leave the body' is simply false: three of the four rounds that struck Lennon passed clean through him. Those pass-throughs explain the rest. The 'mismatched' bullet is the same round in two states of deformation, one crushed to a lead lump, one keeping its semi-wadcutter shoulder; the analyst who first flagged the difference concedes a photograph of the property tags cannot prove two ammunition types, and no ballistics report establishes a second gun. The three bullet holes a responding officer logged in the glass doors are exactly what one shooter produces here: the single miss plus the three exiting rounds, up to four reaching the glass behind Lennon. The much-repeated detail that those holes were photographed and then removed and made to vanish has no traceable source in any released record.
- Claim: The Dakota doorman, Jose Perdomo, was a CIA-linked Cuban exile who was never questioned and may have been the real shooter.
  Evidence: Two claims are tangled here, and both fail. By one 1987 account Perdomo was an anti-Castro Cuban who had chatted with Chapman about the Bay of Pigs hours earlier, which is a real and eerie detail. But the identification of him as Jose Sanjenis Perdomo, the CIA officer who ran Operation 40, is a surname-based conflation of two different men: the Operation 40 figure is reported to have died in 1974, and even David Whelan, the researcher who most forcefully argues the case was mishandled, calls that identification a red herring. And Perdomo did not fire. He disarmed Chapman and kicked the revolver away, which is not the act of an accomplice, and he identified Chapman to the responding officers, so he plainly spoke to police, whatever formal statement was or was not preserved.
- Claim: A CIA hypnosis consultant, Milton Kline, was brought to examine Chapman, which cannot be coincidence.
  Evidence: Milton Kline was genuinely a hypnosis authority who had consulted for the CIA's behavior-control research and who boasted he could create a 'patsy,' and he did examine Chapman, which is a real and uncomfortable coincidence. But he was retained by Chapman's own defense, as one of roughly nine mental-health experts assembled for an intended insanity plea, not sent by any agency. The prosecutor in fact discovered Kline had falsified his professional credentials while reviewing the defense's own witness list, and Kline was indicted for perjury in 1981. A defense-hired expert who turned out to be a credential-faker is a weak foundation for a covert-operations claim, and nothing connects his examination to any program. The related claim that Chapman's first lawyer was 'fired' to insert Kline is also wrong: that attorney, Herbert Adlerberg, withdrew of his own accord citing threats.
- Claim: Once Chapman confessed, the case was never really investigated, so the anomalies were never resolved.
  Evidence: This is the real core of the whole file, and it is half true. There was a full arrest and interrogation, a grand-jury indictment, crime-scene and ballistics work, and an autopsy. But because Chapman pleaded guilty in June 1981, against his own lawyer's objection, there was no trial, so the ballistics, the wound trajectories, and the witnesses were never tested by cross-examination or aired in open court. That is the real reason these questions cannot be cleanly resolved: the case rests on a confession and a plea, not on adjudicated evidence. It is a genuine limitation, and it is not the same thing as a cover-up. Guilty pleas end most homicide cases, and the largest documentary test yet, the extensive police, prosecutor, and parole files released to a 2023 documentary under freedom-of-information requests, turned up no evidence of a second party.
- Claim: A lone, disturbed fan cannot account for a killing this consequential; there must be more to it.
  Evidence: The scale of the loss is real, but consequence is not a measure of conspiracy. Chapman confessed, pleaded guilty over his lawyers' objections, and described a lone act driven by his own fixation and hunger for fame, an account he has repeated with striking consistency across four and a half decades and more than a dozen parole hearings. Five of the six defense experts found him psychotic, but no examiner on either side attributed his state to outside programming, and his lifelong private world of imaginary 'little people' long predates any alleged contact. The court found him competent to enter his plea. Every documented element of the crime points to one man, and the record contains nothing that requires a second hand behind him.

## Why people believe it
- MKUltra actually happened. Once a government has been caught running real mind-control experiments on unwitting people, and even drafting plans to induce an assassination, the claim that it programmed one more killer no longer sounds absurd, and the proven abuse lends borrowed credibility to the unproven one.
- The FBI really did target Lennon. The Nixon-era surveillance and deportation campaign are documented fact, so the theory can point to genuine state hostility toward him and present a murder as its logical endpoint, even though the files show nothing of the kind.
- There are a few real, unresolved oddities. The emergency team's account of the wounds genuinely conflicts with the autopsy, a responding officer really did log extra holes in the glass, a real CIA-linked hypnotist really did examine Chapman, and the case really was never tried. None of these proves a second shooter, but they are not nothing, and a researcher who catalogs them can honestly say the official story has loose ends.
- The loss was staggering and the cause felt too small. That a figure of Lennon's stature could be erased by a single obscure fan is emotionally unbearable to many, and the mind reaches for a cause proportionate to the person, a powerful agency rather than a lone stranger.
- It arrived in an era of justified distrust. Coming after Watergate, the Church Committee revelations, and COINTELPRO, the claim landed with an audience already primed to believe intelligence agencies capable of almost anything, which lowered the bar for accepting a plot without proof.

## Open questions
- The medical examiner Elliot Gross's full autopsy report and wound diagrams have never been publicly released; only the death certificate is public. Gross was later removed as chief medical examiner amid findings that he had altered autopsy conclusions in unrelated police-custody cases, which is a fair reason not to take his summary purely on trust. The single document that would settle the entrance-and-exit question directly is therefore not available for independent review, and the file should not lean on the medical examiner's authority alone.
- The genuine discrepancy between the emergency-room team's account of the wounds and the medical examiner's is unresolved on paper, and no independent forensic pathologist unconnected to the case has ever examined the wounds. The most economical explanation is ordinary trauma-team misidentification, supported by the scene geometry, but the primary documents that would confirm it are not public. David Whelan's central exhibits, the lead detective's notebooks he says he purchased and a document he says overturns the timeline, are likewise privately held and cannot currently be verified or refuted.
- Mark David Chapman was reportedly not given a toxicology or drug test when he was arrested, an omission the lead detective himself called abnormal. Because it happened at booking, before any plea, it is not explained away by the guilty plea, and it is the clearest procedural gap in the case that is both documented and genuinely unaccounted for.
- MKUltra's proven history means claims of state mind control cannot be dismissed on principle the way a flat-earth claim can. The honest position is that the program was real and monstrous, that it even studied induced assassination, and that no evidence connects it to Chapman, so the specific claim stays unproven rather than either confirmed or cleanly refuted.
