## Summary
The claim that our entire universe (stars, brains, and all) is a computer program running on hardware built by some other civilization. Its modern form is not a hunch but a formal argument from Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom, and physicists have since debated whether it could ever be tested at all.

## The claim
That what we experience as physical reality is in fact a highly detailed computer simulation, run by a technologically advanced ‘posthuman’ civilization, and that we (our brains, memories, and sense of an external world) are artifacts of that program rather than products of an unsimulated universe.

## Origin and timeline
- 1641: René Descartes, in his Meditations on First Philosophy, imagines an all-powerful 'evil demon' bent on deceiving him about the existence of the external world, the first rigorous version of the doubt the simulation argument revives.
- 1981: Hilary Putnam popularizes the 'brain in a vat' scenario in Reason, Truth and History, updating Descartes' demon for an age of neuroscience and computers.
- 1999: The film The Matrix dramatizes a simulated reality for a mass audience, giving the idea its modern cultural shorthand.
- 2003: Philosopher Nick Bostrom publishes 'Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?' in Philosophical Quarterly, formalizing the modern simulation argument as a trilemma.
- 2012: Physicists Silas Beane, Zohreh Davoudi, and Martin Savage publish a paper proposing that if the universe runs on an underlying numerical grid, it might leave a detectable signature in the distribution of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.
- 2020: Astronomer David Kipping publishes a Bayesian re-analysis of Bostrom's argument, concluding the odds are 'inconclusive,' close to fifty-fifty, and dependent on assumptions that can't currently be checked.

## The evidence, claim by claim
- Claim: A rigorous, peer-reviewed philosophical argument concludes we are 'almost certainly' living in a simulation.
  Evidence: Bostrom's paper does conclude this, but only as one branch of a trilemma. He argues that at least one of three things must be true: almost all civilizations at our level go extinct before they can build the computers needed for realistic 'ancestor simulations'; almost none of those that could, choose to; or we are almost certainly in one. The paper is an argument about probability distributions across an unknown future, not a demonstration that the third branch is the one that's actually true.
- Claim: Physicists have proposed real, testable signatures of a simulated universe.
  Evidence: True, and it's a serious body of work: Beane, Davoudi, and Savage showed that if spacetime runs on a discrete numerical lattice (the same technique used in real supercomputer physics simulations), the underlying grid could show up as a subtle directional asymmetry in the highest-energy cosmic rays. No such asymmetry has been observed, and the authors themselves frame it as a speculative constraint, not a detection.
- Claim: If a signature were found, it would prove we live in a simulation.
  Evidence: It would prove the opposite of what people assume: a lattice signature would only show that spacetime is discrete at small scales, which is also predicted by several serious, non-simulation quantum-gravity theories. Discreteness is consistent with living in a simulation; it is not evidence exclusive to it.

## Why people believe it
- Digital technology has advanced so quickly and convincingly, from pixelated games to photorealistic virtual worlds in five decades, that extrapolating the trend to 'indistinguishable from reality' feels intuitive rather than speculative.
- It offers a modern, technology-flavored answer to the oldest questions in philosophy (why does anything exist, is there a purpose behind it) without requiring traditional religious commitments.
- Bostrom's argument arrives with academic authority and formal logic, which makes it feel more like a proof than a probability estimate, especially once summarized outside the original paper.
- Prominent technologists and physicists have publicly entertained the idea, lending it a halo of scientific credibility even where the underlying claim remains untestable.

## Open questions
- Bostrom's trilemma says at least one of three things is true, not which one. More than two decades after the 2003 paper, nothing has narrowed down whether the answer is near-universal extinction before the posthuman stage, near-universal disinterest in running ancestor simulations, or actual simulation, and it's unclear what kind of evidence, even in principle, could settle it.
- Whether the hypothesis is falsifiable at all remains contested. Critics like Scott Aaronson and Sabine Hossenfelder argue that any proposed test can always be answered by imagining a more powerful hypothetical simulator, which would place the idea outside what philosophers of science mean by a testable claim, but whether that argument is right is itself unsettled.
- Physicists have shown that a simulated universe built on a computational lattice could in principle leave a subtle signature in the distribution of cosmic rays. Not resolved is whether such a signature, if one were ever found, could actually distinguish a simulation from a non-simulated universe that simply turns out to be discrete at the smallest scales for other reasons: several serious quantum-gravity theories predict exactly that, with no simulator required.
- The whole argument assumes a sufficiently detailed computational process could host genuine subjective experience: that a simulated mind would actually be conscious, not just behave as if it were. That premise, known in philosophy of mind as substrate independence, is a live and unresolved debate in its own right, and the trilemma inherits whatever uncertainty attaches to it.
