ZOG stands for Zionist Occupied Government, and the Anti-Defamation League records it as a white supremacist acronym for the belief that the United States government is controlled by Jews. That the United States, and in some versions Britain and other Western governments along with their media, are not genuinely governed by their elected institutions but are occupied and directed by a Jewish or Zionist power operating in secret, so that the visible government is a front for that control.

## Origin and timeline
- 1903: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is published in Russia, purporting to record a secret Jewish plan for world domination. It is a forgery, largely plagiarised from an earlier French political satire that had nothing to do with Jews, and was exposed as such in the 1920s. It nonetheless supplies the template that every later version of the secret-Jewish-control claim reuses.
- 1976: The acronym ZOG appears in a text by the American neo-Nazi Eric Thomson, condensing the older claim into four letters and giving it the grammar of a government agency rather than of a racial libel.
- 1978: The Turner Diaries is published by the white supremacist William Luther Pierce under the pseudonym Andrew MacDonald. The term is used repeatedly in it. The novel is later considered a key influence on Timothy McVeigh, who bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people.
- 1983-1984: The term spreads through American white supremacist and Christian Identity networks, and is adopted by the neo-Nazi group known as the Order, whose criminal campaign gives it wide publicity. ## The evidence, claim by claim
- Claim: It is just shorthand for the influence of a lobby, and criticising a government's foreign policy is not racism.
  Evidence: Criticising foreign policy is not racism, and this file does not suggest otherwise. But that is not what the term encodes. - Most people meeting the acronym now encounter it stripped of its history. They are not being recruited by neo-Nazis; they are picking up a piece of vocabulary from a comment thread, with no indication that it was built in 1976 for a movement that wrote its slogans as kill orders.

## Open questions
- How much of the current usage comes from people who know the lineage and how much from people repeating an acronym they have never seen expanded. The FOA figures measure volume and engagement rather than intent, and the two questions call for different responses.
- Whether naming the origin works as a counter. Explaining that a term was coined by a neo-Nazi in 1976 may deter a casual user, or may be dismissed as the sort of thing the theory already predicts would be said, and there is little published testing either way.
