A. Lee Stewart Jr., co-owner of the Braxton Democrat newspaper, returns to the site the next morning. He reports a strange odor still lingering, along with skid-like marks and an oily or gummy residue on the ground, which he takes as physical traces of a landing.
- 1971Lin Biao incidentGovernment & Intelligence
In the small hours, Lin Biao, Ye Qun, and Lin Liguo board Trident 1E aircraft 256 at Shanhaiguan and take off. At roughly 2:30 a.m. the plane crashes near Öndörkhaan in the Mongolian People's Republic. All nine people aboard, eight men and one woman, are killed.

Jay Anson publishes 'The Amityville Horror: A True Story,' based on roughly 45 hours of taped interviews with the Lutzes; it becomes a multimillion-copy bestseller.

Tupac Shakur dies in Las Vegas six days after being shot on 7 September, an unsolved killing that pushes the East Coast/West Coast rivalry, and the feud between Death Row Records in Los Angeles and Bad Boy Records in New York, to its peak. Wallace, Bad Boy's biggest star, is widely and wrongly rumored in some quarters to have had a hand in it.

After six days in critical care at University Medical Center, Tupac dies of respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest at age 25. The Clark County coroner conducts an autopsy; his mother, Afeni Shakur, authorizes the end of treatment.

After six days on life support at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Tupac Shakur dies of his wounds at age 25. His death is confirmed by the hospital and the coroner and reported worldwide.

A second Moscow blast destroys an apartment building on Kashirskoye Highway, killing around 120 people. The same day, Duma speaker Gennadiy Seleznyov announces from the chamber that a building has been blown up in Volgodonsk, a city where no such bombing has yet occurred.
