The robbery itself, about 88 million euros of jewels stolen on 19 October 2025, is real and documented; only the “footage” is fake.

As users pressed to know whether McConnell's genuine July 12 office photo was authentic, many put the question to X's Grok, which confidently declared it AI-generated: Grok told users that an OpenAI tool had detected a Google SynthID watermark in the image, that McConnell's office had 'released no such image,' and that Snopes, the Cincinnati Enquirer, and the Courier Journal had all confirmed it a hoax. Every part of that was false. When Snopes, PolitiFact, and Poynter checked, Google's own Gemini found no SynthID watermark, OpenAI's verification tool found none either, none of the outlets Grok named had debunked the photo, and digital-forensics analysts saw no sign of generative AI. Grok had, in effect, hallucinated its own fact-check, inventing both the watermark and the sources it cited, and briefly lent a machine's authority to the liar's-dividend claim that a real photo was fake, forcing human fact-checkers to debunk the debunk. It does not change the rated claim; the verdict remains debunked, and the episode is one more case of authentic evidence being waved away as synthetic, this time by an AI that manufactured the evidence against it.
