For much of the 2010s, audiences at climate talks, on podcasts, and across YouTube heard a soft-spoken academic deliver a message far bleaker than anything in the official reports. Guy McPherson, a retired University of Arizona professor of natural resources and of ecology and evolutionary biology, told them that humanity was not merely in danger but effectively finished. Through his blog Nature Bats Last and a running “Climate Change Summary and Update,” he popularized a phrase that became his signature: near-term human extinction, or NTHE.
The heart of the claim was a chain of self-reinforcing feedback loops that McPherson argued were already unstoppable, with an abrupt release of Arctic methane as the trigger that would drive warming so fast the planet would soon be uninhabitable for humans. Pressed on timing, he did not hedge into the distant future. On a 2016 tour of New Zealand he said he could not imagine a human being left on the planet in ten years, and in his talks and in the online doom community the target hardened into a specific window: essentially no humans left by around 2026.
That year has now arrived, and it is the plainest possible test of the forecast. There has been no methane-driven extinction event. Civilization, for all its genuine climate troubles, is still here. None of this endorses the extinction timeline. It explains why the fear had purchase: it braided together true premises, a real expert, and a widely felt distrust of institutional understatement. The problem was never that the underlying concerns were fake. It was the specific, unsupported leap from “serious and worsening” to “humans gone within a decade.”
The methane gun that did not fire
The prediction stood or fell on one mechanism: an abrupt, self-amplifying release of Arctic methane, the so-called clathrate gun, firing on a timescale of years. And that is precisely the piece mainstream science does not support. A 2017 study concluded the marine hydrate gun hypothesis was unlikely. A 2018 synthesis in the Annual Review of Environment and Resources found it unlikely that catastrophic, widespread dissociation of marine methane clathrates would be triggered by continued warming at contemporary rates during this century. And much of the methane that does escape the seafloor dissolves in the ocean before it ever reaches the atmosphere.
The observations agree. Atmospheric methane is rising, which is a real and worrying problem, but it is a gradual climb, not the sudden, accelerating spike that a clathrate-gun extinction would require. The runaway signal simply is not in the data. Mann argues that certain-doom messaging today can be as damaging to climate action as outright denial: both lead to inaction, one by insisting nothing is wrong, the other by insisting nothing can be done. He has been blunt that McPherson-style rhetoric is destructive, precisely because it takes the people most alarmed and most likely to fight for emissions cuts and persuades them to give up.
