What is predicted, and what happened last time

Most conspiracy claims are safely vague. A few name a date, and a date is the one thing that answers itself. Below are the dates still ahead of us, and then the record of the ones that arrived.

How to read this: we publish the case before the date, not after, so nothing here is written with hindsight. Some of these predictions ended in real harm to real people. Where that is true the entry says so plainly rather than treating the date as a punchline.

Predicted: A total solar eclipse over Greenland, Iceland and Spain fulfils biblical end-times prophecy.

What happened: The eclipse happened exactly as predicted by every astronomical table, giving mainland Spain its first totality since 1905. Nothing else did. The prophecy rode on an event whose timing was never in doubt, which is the pattern this genre depends on.

What happened: The date passed with no shutdown anywhere. No government or space agency had ever issued such a warning, and there is no integrated global grid that could be switched off. This was the single biggest traffic event in this site's history, which is worth stating plainly: the fear was very widely held.

What happened: The dates came and went. Its originator reinterpreted the vision toward new dates in early October, which is the move that keeps a failed prediction alive: the date moves, the belief does not.

Predicted: A catastrophic megaquake and tsunami strike Japan, as supposedly foretold in Ryo Tatsuki's manga The Future I Saw.

What happened: No megaquake came. Tourism to Japan fell measurably in the run-up, so a prediction that turned out to be about nothing still had costs. Japan is genuinely one of the most seismically active places on Earth, which is what made the guess feel safe.

What happened: The window opened in April 2014 and closed with the fourth eclipse on 28 September 2015. No such event occurred. Lunar tetrads are ordinary astronomy and recur on a schedule anyone can look up.

What happened: The cycle completed and the calendar rolled over, which is what calendars do. Maya scholars had said so throughout, and no inscription ever predicted an ending.

Predicted: A spacecraft from a Next Level travelled concealed behind Comet Hale-Bopp, and members could rendezvous with it by leaving their physical bodies.

What happened: Thirty-nine people died by suicide in Rancho Santa Fe between 22 and 26 March 1997 in order to make the rendezvous. There was no craft behind Hale-Bopp; the comet was photographed continuously by observatories worldwide and remains one of the best documented of the twentieth century. This entry is on the board because the cost of a dated prophecy is not always disappointment.

Predicted: The ancestors return to raise the dead, replace the herds and drive the colonists into the sea, if the living first destroy their own cattle and crops.

What happened: The appointed day passed like any other. No ancestors rose and no cattle appeared. The famine that followed the slaughter of the herds killed an estimated 40,000 people and broke Xhosa independence. This is the entry that should stop anyone treating a failed prophecy as a joke.

What happened: Tens of thousands had expected it. The day came and went with no return, and the movement itself named the outcome the Great Disappointment. A modern echo ran the same arithmetic to 21 May 2011, then revised to 21 October 2011, with the same result.
