The real heist, and the footage that never existed

Keep two things apart from the start. On 19 October 2025, about half an hour after the Louvre opened, a crew disguised as workers drove a truck-mounted lift against the museum’s Seine-side facade, cut through a window into the Apollo Gallery, forced two display cases and made off with eight pieces of the French crown jewels, worth roughly 88 million euros. The raid took only minutes. That robbery is real, documented by wire services and French authorities, and it is not what this file rates.

What it rates is the wave of clips that appeared within hours, captioned as CCTV or phone footage from inside the theft. They had the look everyone wanted: grainy, timestamped, shot from a fixed overhead angle, the visual grammar of a leaked security tape. They spread across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook as the thing the story seemed to be missing. And they were fakes.

The question here is narrow and answerable: were these clips real recordings of the robbery? No. Independent fact-checkers traced them to a video generator. The heist happened; the “video of it” did not.

The case for it

Why the fakes were so easy to believe

It is worth stating plainly why so many sensible people shared these clips, because the reasons are not stupidity. First, the event was genuinely staggering: a daylight raid on the most famous museum on earth, crown jewels gone in minutes. A viewer’s reasonable prior was that dramatic footage of such a thing must exist, so the appearance of a clip felt like confirmation, not a claim to be tested.

Second, the tool was good. These clips were made with Sora 2, OpenAI’s video generator, and they carried exactly the texture people read as authentic: low resolution, a burned-in timestamp, the still, unglamorous angle of a ceiling camera. Nothing looked produced, and that plainness is persuasive.

Third, and most important, there was a real vacuum. No authentic interior footage of the robbery was released, because security recordings from an open criminal case do not go on social media. Curiosity had nowhere legitimate to land, so the first plausible “heist video” to surface absorbed all of it. The fake did not have to beat the real footage; there was no real footage to beat.

The tells: watermarks, reflections and a gallery that is wrong

The debunk is clean because several teams reached the same place. The decisive piece was provenance. Using a reverse image search, AFP surfaced an early French-language TikTok upload in which the “Sora” watermark, OpenAI’s generator tag, was still visible on the footage. In another version, spread by a Hong Kong page with more than 240,000 followers, a “Websiren” watermark appeared to have been laid over the clip precisely to cover that Sora tag, a paste-over that is itself a sign of manipulation, not authenticity.

Then the physics. AFP flagged that the hand of the person supposedly filming was reflected in empty space, with no mirror to justify it, and that a burglar appeared to step onto a spot with nothing to support his weight. Reviewers also noted that the display-case layoutin the clips did not match the real Apollo Gallery, and that separate versions of the “footage” depicted the raid in mutually contradictory ways, different thieves, different methods, different numbers, which is what you get from a generator, not from a camera.

Why fake footage of a real crime spreads

The pattern is more interesting than gullibility. When a real, high-interest event has no available footage, it creates a demand that generative tools are now perfectly positioned to meet. The audience is primed to believe something dramatic happened, because it did, and the missing clip is the one thing the story seems to lack. A synthetic video does not have to convince from scratch; it only has to fit an expectation the news already built.

Layer on the ordinary economics of feeds, where the account that posts the sensational thing first is rewarded with reach, and the incentive to manufacture and repost becomes structural. Add tools that can produce a convincing security-camera clip in minutes, and the supply of plausible fakes is effectively unlimited. None of this requires a grand plot. It needs a real event, a footage gap, cheap tools and a fast feed.

The harm runs two ways. The fakes mislead directly, and they also corrode trust in the genuine record: once people know clips can be invented, real evidence can be waved off as “probably AI.” Guarding against both credulity and reflexive denial is the whole job.

Hold the two layers apart, because that is the entire point.   • How can a viewer check a clip like this? If only social accounts have it, treat it as unverified.
  • Why did the vacuum form? Genuine security footage from an active criminal case is rarely published, so a real, high-interest event can go without any authentic video for a long time. That gap between public curiosity and available footage is the opening synthetic media exploits.
  • Do watermark tricks defeat detection? Partly. Overlaying a second watermark to hide a generator’s tag, as happened here, can slow casual identification, which is why provenance and physical-consistency checks, not a single visible logo, remain the reliable test.
