A real crash, and no pictures of it

On 5 August 2026 an empty Falcon 9 upper stage, adrift since its launch in January 2025 and by then looping around the Moon, came down on the lunar surface. Astronomers had worked out that it would and had said so in advance. The event was on the calendar.

It was confirmed the way these things usually are. The European Southern Observatory reported that its Very Large Telescope had picked up the chemical fingerprints of sodium and lithium at around the time of impact, marking a plume that lasted five to ten minutes. NASA had said beforehand that it would try to observe the impact from the ground while warning that weather and lighting might make that difficult, and the day after it had published nothing further.

So the news broke as a fact without an image attached. That gap lasted about fifteen minutes.

The clip that arrived to fill it

A video appeared on TikTok, timestamped less than a quarter of an hour after the expected moment of impact, showing an object driving into the lunar surface and throwing up a white cloud. Full Fact then asked astronomers. They agreed the clip was not genuine, and gave a reason beyond the vibe: it is inconsistent with the Moon's actual topography and with the place the stage really came down. Dr Matt Bothwell, public astronomer at the University of Cambridge, said he had essentially 100 percent confidence it was an AI fake. The case for it

Why this fake is harder than the usual kind

The person who shared this deserves more credit than the usual target of a fact-check, because almost every defence normally available had already been used up.

Ordinarily the advice is: check whether the event happened. Here it did, on the date given, to the vehicle named. Check whether a reputable body confirmed it. One did, and by an unusually rigorous method. Check the timing. The clip surfaced within fifteen minutes of the predicted impact, which reads like a telescope feed rather than an archive file. Every one of those checks returns a green light, and none of them touches the video.

There is a real gap in public understanding underneath this, and it is not stupidity. Most people assume that if an agency confirms something happened in space, somebody watched it happen. Confirming and filming are different problems, and for a small impact on the far-flung surface of another world, the confirmation arrives as a spectral line. A headline saying the crash is confirmed sits perfectly comfortably beside a caption saying here is the footage, and nothing in the reader's experience flags that the second does not follow from the first.

What the evidence shows

A clip made in April, waiting for an event

The decisive fact is chronological and it is not close. The video predates the thing it claims to show by four months.

That is a different order of misattribution from the ones this site usually documents. Our files are full of real footage relabelled by a few days or moved between countries: a Delhi mosque fire captioned as Nepal, a Turkish archaeological site captioned as Tennessee, a West Bengal crowd captioned as Colombia. Those are opportunistic. This one was manufactured in advance, by an account that produces a stream of similar material, and then matched to an event when a suitable one came along.

The hundred-foot crater in the caption belongs to the same manufacture. Nobody measured a crater in the hours after the impact, and nobody could have. Establishing the size of a fresh lunar crater means waiting for an orbiter to photograph the site on a later pass and comparing it with earlier imagery, which is a job measured in weeks. A specific number circulating on the day is not a finding that outran the press release. It is set dressing.

The people who knew and shared it anyway

The strangest feature of this episode is that the corrections travelled with the video and did not slow it down. Several of the most-viewed posts carried replies pointing out the AI origin. At least one carried X's own automated Made with AI label. It kept spreading, and Snopes readers still wrote in to ask whether it was real.

One reply is worth quoting for what it reveals: the video, it said, was AI-generated to provide visual context. That is not deception and it is not credulity. It is somebody treating a synthetic image as an acceptable illustration of a true fact, the way a newspaper might once have run an artist's impression. The difference is that an artist's impression was labelled as one on the page, and a video is read as a record of something that happened.

That habit is what makes this genre hard to fight. A fake that asserts something false can be corrected by establishing what is true. A fake shared as decoration on something that is already true has no false claim to attack. It survives because the caption is accurate, and it degrades the value of footage generally, because every future clip of a real event now has to prove it is not an illustration of one.

The spectrum was the evidence
