Richard Wagner's opera Der fliegende Hollander premieres in Dresden, drawing directly on Heine's version. The opera fixes the Flying Dutchman in popular culture and carries the story far beyond the world of sailors.
- 1979The Markov umbrella murderGovernment & Intelligence
At the inquest, coroner Gavin Thurston returns a verdict that Markov was unlawfully killed, and records that death resulted from ricin introduced into the body in a small metal pellet. No suspect is named.
- 2025Cybertruck explosionGovernment & Intelligence
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill says the driver died of a gunshot wound to the head that appears self-inflicted, fired just before the explosion. Investigators recover a handgun at the driver’s feet. The identity is not yet confirmed because the body was badly burned.
- 2025New Orleans truck attackGovernment & Intelligence
About a day into the investigation, the FBI publicly reverses that assessment. Officials state that the evidence indicates the attacker acted alone, that he was inspired by ISIS, and that reports of accomplices placing devices were not borne out. The FBI classifies the attack as an act of terrorism.
