During a violent storm at Widecombe-in-the-Moor in Dartmoor, Devon, witnesses describe a great ball of fire ripping through the church of St Pancras during an afternoon service, killing four and injuring many. Contemporaries blame the devil or the flames of hell; it is now often cited as one of the earliest detailed accounts consistent with ball lightning.
