- 1976Operation CondorGovernment & Intelligence
A car bomb kills former Chilean ambassador Orlando Letelier and his American colleague Ronni Moffitt in Washington, D.C.'s Sheridan Circle. It is Condor's most notorious operation, and the first state-sponsored assassination of a foreign official on U.S. soil.
- 2021Litvinenko poisoningGovernment & Intelligence
The European Court of Human Rights rules in Carter v. Russia that Russia was responsible for Litvinenko's assassination, finding it established beyond reasonable doubt that Lugovoi and Kovtun killed him while acting as agents of the Russian state, and orders Russia to pay his widow Marina 100,000 euros. Russia calls the ruling unfounded.
