Late in the evening Mattei's Morane-Saulnier MS.760 Paris, flying from Catania in Sicily toward Milan's Linate airport, crashes in bad weather near the village of Bascape in the province of Pavia. Mattei, pilot Irnerio Bertuzzi, and American Time-Life journalist William McHale are all killed.

At about 5:15 p.m., five gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan enter the National Assembly during a question-and-answer session, draw automatic rifles hidden under their coats, and open fire. Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Speaker Karen Demirchyan, deputy speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, a cabinet minister, and three others are killed; dozens are wounded.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentences Raniere to 120 years in prison and a fine of $1.75 million. By then several co-defendants have pleaded guilty; Nancy Salzman, Lauren Salzman, Allison Mack, Clare Bronfman, and Kathy Russell are all convicted on their pleas, with sentences ranging from probation to 81 months.

At the Lagos judicial panel, an army representative concedes that troops were deployed to the toll gate to enforce the curfew, while a military spokesman continues to deny that soldiers shot at protesters.
