Shortly after midnight, the Mercedes S280 carrying Diana and Dodi Fayed, driven by Ritz Hotel security manager Henri Paul and pursued by paparazzi, crashes into the thirteenth pillar of the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. Paul and Fayed die at the scene; Diana dies later in hospital. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, the only one wearing a seatbelt, survives with serious injuries.
