    Lake Bodom murdersUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

    The Espoo District Court acquits Gustafsson of all charges, finding the evidence inconclusive, no adequate motive shown, and certainty unattainable after 45 years. The Finnish state later pays him compensation for the mental suffering of his long remand. The case reverts to unsolved.

    Politkovskaya assassinationGovernment & Intelligence

    Politkovskaya is shot four times, including a shot to the head at close range, in the lobby of her apartment building on Lesnaya Street in Moscow. A pistol is left at the scene, the signature of a contract killing. The date is Vladimir Putin's birthday.

    Zainichi privilege mythSecret Societies & Power

    The Kyoto District Court orders Zaitokukai and named activists to pay roughly 12 million yen in damages and bars demonstrations within 200 meters of the school, in a decision widely reported as the first Japanese court ruling to treat this hate speech as illegal racial discrimination.
