    The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brings the United States into the war and leaves the Pacific coast braced for an invasion or air raid. Blackouts, air-raid drills, and rumors of enemy planes and submarines become routine along the California shore.

    Some 3,000 officers raid about 150 properties across 11 federal states, arresting 25 people (27 are eventually charged) linked to a group nicknamed the Patriotic Union. Prosecutors allege a plot to storm the Bundestag, arrest lawmakers, and install the aristocrat Heinrich XIII Prinz Reuss as head of state.
