    Circleville LettersUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

    Mary Gillispie stops her bus to tear down an obscene sign about her daughter posted on her route. It is rigged to a cardboard box concealing a small-caliber pistol wired to fire when the sign is pulled. The trap fails to go off.

    Henry Liu assassinationGovernment & Intelligence

    The Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs of the US House of Representatives opens hearings on the murder of Henry Liu. Helen Liu testifies. Members, among them Representative Norman Mineta, press the point that US law bars arms sales to governments that intimidate US citizens, at a time when Taiwan is buying hundreds of millions of dollars in American arms.

    Kiki Camarena murderGovernment & Intelligence

    Camarena is abducted in daylight near the US consulate in Guadalajara; his Mexican pilot, Alfredo Zavala Avelar, is seized the same day. Camarena is taken to a house at 881 Lope de Vega owned by Caro Quintero and tortured over about 30 hours, part of it recorded on tape.

    Amid a bitter contract dispute with Justice, Inslaw files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. The company alleges the Department withheld payments and misappropriated its enhanced, privately funded version of PROMIS.

    Days after the jacket is found, Lindy Chamberlain is released from prison and her life sentence is remitted by the Northern Territory government, pending a full review of the convictions.

    Trump signs an executive order cutting US assistance to South Africa and offering refugee resettlement to Afrikaners, framing them as victims of racial persecution. Crime statisticians and the South African government again say the premise is false.
