The archive, day by day

On this day in conspiracies

The dated turning points behind the case files: assassinations, crashes, leaks, votes, and the moments a theory was born, each drawn straight from a file's sourced timeline. We only place an entry on a day the record actually names.

  1. 1967
    Che Guevara executionGovernment & Intelligence

Bolivian Rangers ambush the guerrillas in the Quebrada del Yuro ravine near La Higuera. Guevara, wounded in the leg and with his rifle disabled, is captured alive and taken to the village, where he is held in the schoolhouse.

  2. 1998
Gary Webb's Dark AllianceGovernment & Intelligence

The Inspector General's Volume II (the Contra Story) is released unclassified. It acknowledges that the CIA worked with, and did not act to cut off, numerous individuals and organizations tied to the Contras despite allegations or information of drug trafficking, and describes a 1982 arrangement that limited the agency's duty to report such trafficking. Many read it as partial vindication of Webb; the papers that attacked him give it little coverage.

  3. 1998
CIA and Contra cocaineGovernment & Intelligence

The CIA Inspector General releases Volume II of Frederick Hitz's investigation. It denies that the CIA as an organization conspired to traffic drugs, but concedes the agency knew of allegations against dozens of Contra-linked individuals and did not consistently sever ties.

  4. 2009
Jamison family deathsUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

Bobby, Sherilynn, and Madyson Jamison leave their home in Eufaula, Oklahoma, reportedly to look at a 40-acre plot of land near Red Oak, in Latimer County. Home surveillance recorded that day shows the couple making many slow, near-silent trips loading their truck. It is the last confirmed sighting of the family.

  5. 2014
    Blood moon prophecyDoomsday & Prophecy

The second eclipse falls on Sukkot (the Feast of Tabernacles). NASA and astronomers repeatedly note that tetrads are common in this era and fully predictable, and that the alignment with Jewish feasts follows from the calendar, not the miraculous.
