The archive, day by day

On this day in conspiracies

The dated turning points behind the case files: assassinations, crashes, leaks, votes, and the moments a theory was born, each drawn straight from a file's sourced timeline. We only place an entry on a day the record actually names.

  1. 1873
    Mary CelesteUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

After roughly three months of hearings, the court finds no evidence of foul play by the Dei Gratia's crew or anyone else, and awards a comparatively low salvage payment of £1,700, about one-fifth of the ship and cargo's insured value, reflecting the court's lingering suspicion, even without proof of a specific crime.

  2. 1930
Judge Crater disappearanceUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt appoints Crater, a Tammany-connected lawyer and former secretary to State Supreme Court justice and U.S. senator Robert F. Wagner, to fill a vacancy on the New York State Supreme Court. Crater had risen through the Cayuga Democratic Club, a Tammany power base.

  3. 1994
Kurt Cobain's deathUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

An electrician installing a security system discovers Cobain's body in the room above the garage at his Seattle home. A Remington Model 11 shotgun lies across him, and a handwritten note is found nearby. Investigators later estimate he had died on or about 5 April.

  4. 2001
    Face on MarsUFOs & Aliens

MGS is rolled off-nadir for an even sharper, near-overhead pass at about 2 meters per pixel, removing the low grazing-light angle that had produced the original shadows.

  5. 2024
    Eclipse doom theoriesDoomsday & Prophecy

The North American total eclipse triggers a full outbreak: viral claims that CERN will 'open a portal' or a black hole at totality, that the sky will darken for days, flat-Earth arguments, and rapture predictions. Snopes, PolitiFact, the AP, Reuters, and IFLScience debunk each in turn; CERN had already restarted its collider in March, weeks earlier and for routine reasons.

    Aug 2026 eclipse ‘end times’Doomsday & Prophecy

A second US total eclipse fuels an even larger prophecy wave, including a viral claim that its path over several towns named Nineveh echoed the sign of Jonah and warned of judgment on America. Fact-checkers and even sympathetic Christian writers noted the Nineveh claim was inflated and the reading was speculation, not scripture. The date passes uneventfully.
