    Lizzie's friend Alice Russell sees her burning a dress in the kitchen stove, which Lizzie says is stained with paint. The episode, days after the murders, will become one of the most debated points in the case.

    Zodiac KillerUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

    Donald and Bettye Harden, a schoolteacher couple from Salinas, solve the 408 cipher within days. The decoded message boasts of killing for pleasure but contains no name; the final 18 characters remain garbled.

    Project AzorianGovernment & Intelligence

    During the lift, a large portion of the submarine's structure fails and falls back to the ocean floor. A smaller forward section is successfully brought inside the ship's hull.

    The 1985 MOVE bombingGovernment & Intelligence

    After a long standoff at MOVE's compound in the Powelton Village neighborhood, a shootout erupts as police move to evict the group. Officer James Ramp is killed. Nine MOVE members are later convicted of third-degree murder in his death and sentenced to lengthy prison terms; the group has long disputed how Ramp was shot.

    In the early hours of Sunday, on the return leg near Eumemmerring Creek, the couple encounter the object again, Cahill says. She reports getting out of the car, seeing tall dark figures with glowing red eyes in a paddock, then a gap in memory, with the car and its occupants somehow farther along the road than they should have been.

    Coroner Barnes delivers his findings: the men most likely died in an accidental sequence beginning with one brother going overboard while trying to free a fishing lure snagged on a rudder, the other lost attempting a rescue, and Batten knocked into the sea by a swinging boom. He calls it a 'freak accident' while conceding he 'cannot be so definitive about the circumstances under which the deaths occurred.'

    Maui wildfiresScience, Space & Technology

    Around 6:30 a.m. a brush fire ignites in dry vegetation near Lahainaluna Road, linked to downed and re-energized Hawaiian Electric power lines brought down by extreme winds. Firefighters believe they contain it by mid-morning. In the afternoon the fire re-ignites, and driven by winds gusting to roughly 60 to 80 miles per hour, sweeps into Lahaina and destroys most of the town.
