Castillo Armas leads a small force of a few hundred fighters across the border from Honduras. CIA-supplied aircraft bomb and strafe targets, including Guatemala City, while the Voice of Liberation broadcasts greatly exaggerate the size and momentum of the invading force.

Roberto Calvi, chairman of Banco Ambrosiano and known as 'God's Banker' for his dealings with the Vatican, is found hanged beneath Blackfriars Bridge in London with bricks stuffed into his clothing. Banco Ambrosiano, in which the Vatican Bank was a major shareholder, has just collapsed with well over a billion dollars missing. Calvi's death, first ruled suicide, is later widely treated as murder.

Around 7:30 in the morning a passer-by sees Calvi's body hanging from scaffolding beneath Blackfriars Bridge in London. His pockets and clothing hold several bricks and about 14,000 US dollars' worth of cash in three currencies.

Governor Symington holds a press conference on the lights, has an aide brought out in an alien costume, and treats the sightings as a joke.

Contact with the surface ship Polar Prince is lost roughly one hour and forty-five minutes into the descent.
