Malcolm X is shot dead while addressing an Organization of Afro-American Unity rally at the Audubon Ballroom in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. One man, Talmadge Hayer (later Mujahid Abdul Halim), is seized at the scene by the crowd; the killing follows the firebombing of Malcolm X's home a week earlier.
