    Sheikh Mujib assassinationGovernment & Intelligence

    The Mostaq government promulgates the Indemnity Ordinance, granting the coup's participants legal immunity from prosecution. Several of the officers are later given diplomatic postings abroad, placing them beyond reach for years.

    The 43 missing studentsUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

    On the night of 26 to 27 September, students from the Ayotzinapa rural teachers' college travelling on buses toward Iguala, Guerrero, are attacked by municipal police. In the violence that night six people are killed, including three students, and dozens are injured; 43 students are taken away and forcibly disappeared.

    Skripal poisoningGovernment & Intelligence

    The investigative group Bellingcat, with The Insider and press partners, identifies Boshirov as GRU Colonel Anatoliy Chepiga, a decorated officer named a Hero of the Russian Federation. On 8 October it identifies Petrov as Dr Alexander Mishkin, a GRU military doctor. A third officer, Denis Sergeev, is later linked to the operation.

    NASA's 'hidden asteroid'Science, Space & Technology

    NASA's DART spacecraft deliberately crashes into the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos and measurably shortens its orbit, the first demonstration that a threatening asteroid could be nudged aside. It is planetary defense conducted in full public view, live-streamed worldwide.

    Nord Stream sabotageGovernment & Intelligence

    A series of underwater explosions ruptures three of the four Nord Stream pipeline strings in the Baltic Sea near Bornholm, inside the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden but in international waters. Danish seismographs register two events, at roughly 02:03 and 19:03 local time, with signatures typical of detonations rather than earthquakes. Gas leaks bubble to the surface for days.

    Jill Dando murderUnsolved Crimes & Disappearances

    The Netflix documentary series 'Who Killed Jill Dando?' revisits the case for a new audience, laying out the competing theories and the collapse of the case against George. It resolves nothing: the killing is still unsolved.
