In the early hours, U.G. Griffith, a Van Meter implement dealer returning to town, reports seeing a strange bright light moving across the rooftops of the business district. He assumes at first that someone is on the roofs with a lantern.

The Vatican's account begins to unravel. It had said the Pope was found by his secretary, and that he had died reading a devotional book. In fact he was discovered by a nun of the household, Sister Vincenza Taffarel, and he had been holding sheets of paper. The household later said officials altered the story partly to avoid the impropriety of a woman being said to have entered the pope's bedroom.

In Elk Grove Village, Illinois, 12-year-old Mary Kellerman is given a Tylenol capsule for a cold and dies. The same day, in nearby Arlington Heights, 27-year-old Adam Janus dies after taking Tylenol. Grieving relatives Stanley Janus, 25, and Theresa Janus, 19, take capsules from the same household bottle and both die soon after.

The pollster SMRC releases a national survey on the "PKI revival" issue: about 86.8 percent of respondents say they do not believe the PKI is reviving, and 75.1 percent reject the claim that President Joko Widodo is connected to the party. SMRC concludes the issue is being deliberately mobilized by particular political forces rather than reflecting a real resurgence.
