Giovanni Foggi and Carmela De Nuccio are killed near Scandicci, and De Nuccio's body is mutilated. The matching ballistics make clear a single armed killer is at work; the Italian press begins calling him il Mostro di Firenze, the Monster of Florence.

Suzie Streeter and Stacy McCall graduate from Kickapoo High School in Springfield in an afternoon ceremony and spend the evening at a round of graduation parties across the area. Sherrill Levitt, Streeter's mother, is at home; she is last known to have spoken by phone around 11 p.m. about refinishing a piece of furniture.

The Rome court acquits all five defendants, citing insufficient evidence, while accepting that Calvi's death was a murder rather than a suicide. The identity of any killer is left unresolved. Higher courts confirm the acquittals in 2010 and 2011.

Reuters reports that it has no independent evidence to support the sterilization claims; the wire story runs widely, including on Euronews, under the heading that the claims are “unsubstantiated.” Shafi's lawyer, Faris Saly, says the investigation was flawed because authorities sought evidence of sterilizations only after the arrest, and calls the allegations baseless.
