    USS LibertyGovernment & Intelligence

    In the early afternoon, in clear weather and international waters roughly 25 nautical miles off the northern Sinai, the Liberty is attacked by unmarked Israeli Mirage and Mystere jets with cannon, rockets, and napalm, then by three Israeli motor torpedo boats that launch five torpedoes. One strikes the starboard side, tearing open the intelligence spaces. Thirty-four Americans are killed and 171 wounded.

    After a two-month international manhunt that ran through Canada, Portugal and Britain, Ray is arrested at London's Heathrow Airport traveling on a false Canadian passport, and is extradited to Tennessee.

    Bishop Gerardi murderGovernment & Intelligence

    A three-judge civilian court convicts retired Col. Byron Disrael Lima Estrada, former head of military intelligence, his son Capt. Byron Miguel Lima Oliva, and Sgt. José Obdulio Villanueva of the extrajudicial execution of Gerardi, sentencing each to 30 years; the priest Mario Orantes is convicted as an accomplice and sentenced to 20 years. It is the first time army officers are tried for such a crime in a Guatemalan civilian court.

    On the eve of trial in New York, Shell agrees to a settlement of $15.5 million, part of it a trust for the Ogoni people. Shell denies any liability and describes the payment as a humanitarian gesture, not an admission of wrongdoing.
