The amplifiers are familiar: doom-prepping channels, wellness and anti-institution accounts, and engagement-driven pages that have learned a solar countdown performs. The specific claim often attaches a date, and those dates matter, because they are what make the story testable. When a named date passes with the lights on, as they have, the countdown simply migrates to the next real storm and the next available date, its shape unchanged.

The strongest version of the worry

It would be lazy to treat everyone unsettled by this as gullible. The fear rests on a foundation that is, in its factual parts, entirely solid, and it deserves to be stated at full strength before it is tested.

The history is real. The 1859 Carrington Event is the benchmark worst case, a storm so intense it made telegraph systems fail and spark. The 1989 Quebec blackout is the proof of concept that a geomagnetic storm really can take a modern grid down in minutes. The July 2012Carrington-class CME really did cross Earth's orbit and miss us by about nine days; NASA said plainly that we got lucky, and a 2013 study put the cost of a direct hit to the United States alone at somewhere between 600 billion and 2.6 trillion dollars.

The research is real too.
