The archive, day by day

On this day in conspiracies

The dated turning points behind the case files: assassinations, crashes, leaks, votes, and the moments a theory was born, each drawn straight from a file's sourced timeline. We only place an entry on a day the record actually names.

    Mad Gasser of MattoonUnexplained Phenomena

    Steve Biko's deathGovernment & Intelligence

By now gravely injured and semi-conscious, Biko is driven roughly 1,100 kilometres from Port Elizabeth to a prison hospital in Pretoria, lying naked and manacled in the back of a Land Rover, rather than being treated locally.

  4. 1978

New World OrderSecret Societies & Power

President George H.W. Bush, addressing Congress on the Gulf crisis, speaks of the chance for 'a new world order' of nations cooperating after the Cold War, and returns to the phrase in his January 1991 State of the Union. He means multilateral cooperation; conspiracists seize the words as an on-record confession.

American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 hijacked after departing Washington Dulles for Los Angeles, is flown into the western face of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. All 64 aboard (53 passengers, 6 crew, and 5 hijackers) and 125 people inside the building are killed. A section of the outer rings collapses about 20 minutes after impact.

Nineteen al-Qaeda hijackers fly passenger jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and crash a fourth plane in Pennsylvania, killing nearly three thousand people. 8. 2001
    9/11 inside jobGovernment & Intelligence

Nineteen al-Qaeda hijackers seize four airliners. American 11 and United 175 strike the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center; American 77 hits the Pentagon; United 93 crashes in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers fight back. 10. 2001
    9/11 put optionsGovernment & Intelligence

Al-Qaeda hijackers fly four airliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field. When markets reopen on 17 September, airline and insurance stocks fall steeply, and the earlier put positions become sharply more valuable, on paper the exact profile foreknowledge would produce.

  11. 2001
WTC 7 controlled demolitionGovernment & Intelligence

At 5:20 p.m., about seven hours after the North Tower fell, World Trade Center 7 collapses. No aircraft struck it; it had been damaged by falling debris and had burned uncontrolled for hours after firefighters, with no water pressure and other priorities, pulled back and let it go. The building had been evacuated, and no one is killed in its collapse.

After roughly 33 hours, a 22-year-old Utah man, Tyler Robinson, surrenders to authorities. Officials say his father recognized him in images released to the public and contacted law enforcement. Utah Governor Spencer Cox identifies him publicly as the person in custody.
